Lightning

Lightning

Prior to 2017, the CSA lightning policy was based on the '30-30' Rule (i.e. count to 30 seconds to hear thunder after lightning; if thunder heard within 30 seconds, suspend/abandon the game).  The old ’30-30 Rule’ for lightning is no longer in effect .  A new CSA lightning (thunder) policy came into effect in 2017.

The current CSA lightning/thunder policy is if you hear thunder, must immediately suspend game (i.e. "if you hear it roar, go indoors").  Here are the procedures if you hear thunder:
  • Suspend the game immediately;
  • Ask the teams to leave the field and seek shelter (e.g. vehicle, building, etc.);
  • The HR must wait 30 minutes from last time thunder heard before re-starting game;
  • The HR may need to abandon games if there isn’t enough time remaining.  The HR will follow the Game Cancellation Policy/Procedure above if the game is abandoned (see above);
  • If there are games later the same day, the HR (and the ARs) will need to come to next game to make a determination if game can proceed or not.
